Privacy policy
Your night stays yours.
Nyx has no account, no ads, no tracking. Your journal never leaves your device.
Updated October 7, 2026. This policy covers Nyx for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro, and this website.
What the developer receives
Nothing. Nyx has no server, account system, analytics, crash-reporting SDK or advertising. The developer never receives your journal, photos, saved parks, location or usage. iOS gives Nyx a daily on-device performance summary (MetricKit); Nyx keeps only the last average screen brightness, to show you, and never sends it anywhere.
What stays on your device
- Journal and photos. Entries and the photos you choose are stored in the app on your iPhone or iPad. Nyx does not sync them to iCloud. Your device backup settings may include app data. Deleting an entry removes it; deleting the app removes its data, subject to Apple's backups.
- Location. Only if you choose "Near me", and only while you use the app. Nyx compares straight-line distances to parks on your device, and works out the sky "From home tonight" there too, with no request at all. Your coordinates are never sent anywhere. Cloud forecasts, park alerts and campgrounds are requested for all 63 parks at once, so none of them reveals which parks are near you; ranger programs are requested only for a park whose page you open. Each can be switched off in Your privacy. You can always choose a starting park instead.
- Photos. Chosen through Apple's photo picker. Nyx can see only the photos you select.
- Reminders. Local notifications scheduled on your device. About every six hours, iOS may let Nyx refresh your saved parks' forecasts in the background, with the same requests as in the app, so a reminder never rests on an old forecast. Turn reminders off in Nyx, or Background App Refresh in the Settings app.
- Journal export. Export makes a file you save or share yourself, to move your journal to another device. Nyx never sends it anywhere.
- Diagnostics. If Nyx crashes, iOS may give it a technical report. Nyx keeps the last few on your device and shows them in Settings; they leave only if you copy or share one.
- Field mode. While "Where to look" is open, Nyx reads your iPhone's or iPad's motion sensors to turn the sky to where you hold it. Nothing is recorded or sent. Alarms you set there are ordinary alarms on your device, and the night's Live Activity is created on your device without any server.
- Apple Watch. The watch app makes no network requests. Your iPhone passes it your saved parks, the night-vision setting and the cached cloud forecasts directly, through Apple's WatchConnectivity between your paired devices. The watch works out the sky itself and keeps its settings on the watch.
- Apple Vision Pro. The Vision Pro app asks for no permissions: no location, no photos, no notifications. It computes the sky for the park and night you choose on the device itself. Its one network request is the cloud forecast from Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) for the public coordinates of the 63 parks, never anything about you; a switch in Your privacy turns it off, and the forecast is kept on the headset. Apart from that switch's setting it stores nothing. It does not use your surroundings or your room's real direction; the sky it shows is computed, not seen.
- Age range. Some US states require apps to check the age range of new accounts. Only where iOS reports that this applies to your account, Nyx asks iOS for an age range once each time it starts. iOS shows its own sheet, and may already know the answer. Nyx stores nothing from the answer, sends it nowhere and changes nothing because of it; Nyx has no age-restricted content.
- Links and Maps. Some links open in Safari or Maps when you tap them: park pages on nps.gov, campground reservations on Recreation.gov, Globe at Night, Open-Meteo and the Creative Commons licence, or a viewing spot's public coordinates in Maps. Nyx itself makes no request for them; what those apps and sites receive is governed by Apple's and their own policies.
- On-device AI. On iPhones and iPads that support Apple's on-device model, optional explanations use only the records shown on screen. Nothing is sent to a remote AI service.
The three network services
Nyx on iPhone and iPad contacts exactly three services, and only to update public information. Nyx on Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro contacts none.
- Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) for cloud forecasts, three forecast models for comparison, cloud layers, temperature, dew point, wind and visibility. Requests contain the public coordinates of all 63 national parks (each park's main viewing spot), never yours.
- Open-Meteo air quality (air-quality-api.open-meteo.com) for the smoke and haze forecast from Copernicus (CAMS), the European atmosphere service. Requests contain the same public park coordinates, never yours.
- National Park Service (developer.nps.gov) for park alerts, ranger programs and campgrounds. Alert requests contain the codes of all 63 parks; a program request contains the code of the park you opened. The campground request, at most once a week, contains the codes of all 63 parks and nothing about you. If you enter your own NPS key, it is kept in your device's Keychain and sent only to this service.
Like any website, these services see your IP address and ordinary request information. Open-Meteo states that its logs are not linked to identities and are deleted after 90 days. Their own policies govern their servers: Open-Meteo, National Park Service. You can switch each service off in Nyx under Settings → Your privacy; information already saved stays available, and moon, twilight, calendar and journal keep working offline.
This website
get-nyx.com sets no cookies and runs no scripts, analytics or advertising, and it loads nothing from other sites. It is hosted by Cloudflare, which, like any web host, handles your IP address and ordinary request information to deliver the pages and protect the site, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. If a page fails to load, your browser may send Cloudflare a network error report. The night-vision switch on these pages is not saved anywhere.
Children
Nyx collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
